Have any of you had to finally bite the bullet and find a Nursing home for a Loved One?

kayboff asked:

She is 92, very set in her ways, which by the way is not the problem. She is nearly blind and deaf and has developed Audio Hallucinations. She hears people telling her to go outside. Sometimes they tell her to give them money. Last week she went out into the parking lot, it was very windy and started to rain, but she thought that my Aunt who lives 8 hours from here was fixing to pick her up. She would’t listen to reason. She thinks now that I am her enemy, when I Love and Adore her.
If you have had to find a Home for your Loved one, what guide lines did you use? I never dreamed that this could happen.

Yes, sometimes the people we care about need a little help in their last years – help that we can’t provide because of family/work and other commitments. It is sometimes best to have professionals treating them and giving them the attention and therapy we’re ill-equipped to provide. Unless you can watch her 24/7, the nursing home would be best. Find one that has some activities for her, with a caring staff and flexibility for the family.

Visit her continuously. The staff will treat her better if you come around. Most homes are garbage. Good luck.

i have working in nursing homes and hospitals for the past 15 yrs, i live in the uk but u sound like u live in the states, things might b different over there compared to here, but be4 u do move her to a nursing home, u MUST go out and look round the homes to see if it somewhere u would want to live, look how the other residents are dressed and how the staff interact with the residents, i’d rather not say what i’m going to tell u next but u really need to know, u need to consider what the move means to ur loved 1, i have known old people to be moved to nursing homes and within a month they die, the move can prove to be too much strain and stress for them, i know how u must b feeling the strain, and i understand, but please look around the homes b4 u do move her, good luck

I was very lucky because my grandmother really wanted to go into a nursing home, she even had one picked out! She loves it there, she’s not alone all the time like she was in her house, and she’s made many friends.

Is there a “grey power” or seniors organization in your area that you could contact about this issue? It’s certainly a common one and there must be somewhere you can go for help.
