  1. Mardi Gras

The second answer is correct and February 24th (Mardi Gras Day in 2009) is the LAST day of the Carnival season and not the first or only. The parades start about 10 days before Mardi Gras Day and the height of the season is the last 5 or 6 days (Thursday or Friday through Tuesday).

Go to for more info on Carnival in New Orleans. The FAQ section may be particularly useful.

Hope you have a great time!

  2. Mardi Gras

get there the weekend before fat tuesday…i usually arrive friday night and unfortunaltey have to leave during the day on Fat Tuesday–but by then i’m usually well partied out and ready to go home–thats what you see on Cops

Yes, come several days before Feb. 24, and if you want to party and see boobs you do have to go to Bourbon St. at night. During Mardi Gras season, every night at Bourbon is crazy with the flashing and the bead throwing. Also, going to the parades in New Orleans and Metairie, you can sometimes catch crazy naked ladies and bead throwers. You have to go pretty late though, like when the parade is almost finished. You’ll have to pick up one of those Mardi Gras magazines at the store to find the schedules. You can easily spot those anywhere at like Wal-mart.

  4. Mardi Gras

If you want family entertainment go the first weekend the parades start. There’s not so much nudity and ribaldry and the crowds haven’t taken over the city. You’ll get to enjoy the parades, catch lots more beads and see obscure parades like “Barkus” which is a parade of dogs in costumes.

If you want the more ribald side of Mardi Gras go later in the season and you’ll see breasts and asses and penises everywhere and a lot of people urinating or vomiting on the street.

Don’t forget that Fat Tuesday itself ends promptly at Midnight. The cops get on horses and clear the crowds out exactly at midnight on the the actual day of Mardi Gras.

Beware of pickpockets and scam artistis. It’s a long wait for bathrooms too. Bring extra toilet paper with you in your bags because the bathrooms will run out and you’ll be stuck with nothing to wipe with.

Also, if you want to make money at Mardi Gras, rent a port-a-toilet and put it in the back of a truck and charge people ten dollars to use it. You’ll be rich by the end of the day as nobody wants to wait in line for the available city facilities. I once had to urinate in a sink in McDonalds alongside 4 other men becuase all the stalls and urinals were taken.
