What are some really great animated/cartoon films?
KOS-MOS asked:
Please don’t mention Disney films, Tim Burton films, Miyazaki, or any of the other really known ones. Also, I’ve seen Ghost in the Shell, and I’ve heard of Grave of Fireflies, Appleseed, The Secret of Kells, Voices of a Distant Star, Ferngully, the Thief and the Cobbler, Origin: Spirits of the Past, Perfect Blue, and Paprika.
So regular old animated films and anime films are okay here. I’d prefer something that is available in America, something that I can get with an English dub without too much difficulty.
Films
The Swan Princess (not Disney)
Lord of the Rings (from the 80′s I think)

Films
Check out “Watership Down” (1978). For an adult film “Fritz the Cat” (1972).
Films
The Phantom Tollbooth – weird but good
Doggy Poo – kids film but won some animation awards and is strange
Raggedy Ann and Andy a musical adventure – really messed for a kids film
The Adventures of Mark Twain – terrifying for a children’s film (the 70′s one not the b&w film), this is stop motion
Slip Slide Adventures (aka The Waterbabies) – I love this but it might be lame to someone who had not grown up loving it
The Last Unicorn
Cool World
Tokyo Godfathers
Millennium Actress
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto – this is better than I thought it would be
Coraline – Pretty well known so you have likely seen it but just in case I thought I would mentioned it – stop motion
Who Framed Roger Rabbit – I love this and had to mention it.
Persepolis
Akira
Vampire Hunter D
Blood The Last Vampire
Have you checked out the old Disney shorts on youtube? They are amazing. Check out: Willie the Operatic Whale, The Ugly Duckling and Lambert the Sheepish Lion as a start. Also check out the old Max Fleischer animation “Somewhere in Dreamland” a lot of modern cartoons reference it. There are a lot of good Fleischer stuff so go through it on youtube if you are interested .
Okay that’s all I can come up with for now if I think of anything else I’ll add it in.
