What community service actions do colleges look at?

Smile… asked:

I wanted to start a club for endangered species or animals at pounds because my high school doesn’t have one yet. However, people tell me not to waste time with an animal-based club because colleges don’t care about that kind of stuff, only environment and people issues. Well I’ve always had this soft spot for animals and, even though I do strongly care about other world issues, I want to start my own club, be a leader, and help a cause that isn’t getting help. What do you think?

Colleges look at the leadership roles that you take as well as service. Volunteer where your heart lies and take on a significant project, recruit other volunteers, make a difference!! That will get the attention of colleges. Also I was told that Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold Star are particularly significant in the eyes of colleges. They incorporate service and leadership.
