Why does internet not work when laptop is connected directly to modem?

Okay i have a dell laptop and all of a sudden i cant connect to the internet, I have the computer directly connected to the modem and when i use the internet it still does not work what is wrong?! i’ve tried everything! Shouldn’t the laptop automatically connect to the internet since it is connected to the modem?

Reboot it after connecting the laptop.

There are several reasons for it
1) May be the link is broken. So call your service provider and check or connect another pc and check
2) If link is ok then check the IP address
3) After confirming the correct IP address and still not working then could be a virus problem.
4) Still cannot figure out, reinstall OS, set the correct IP address it will work
